Between Mother and Memory (2024)
This is a visual meditation on heritage, memory, and the enduring presence of maternal bonds. Inspired by water, Orishas, and the sacred energy of Iyami—mothers and matriarchs—these images explore the fluidity of memory and the tangible connections we hold to our lineage. At the heart of this work is fabric: textiles passed down from mother to child, rich in cultural significance and familial history. Fashion and culture were ways Mayowa and their mother bonded, exchanging knowledge and admiration through cloth, patterns, and style. By embodying these fabrics in their way, Mayowa honors their mother’s legacy while asserting individuality.
